A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic solution used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth (or teeth) to the adjacent natural teeth on either side of the gap. At Dr A.I. Thomas & Partners, we design bridges to blend seamlessly with your existing teeth in terms of colour, shape, and size. Replacing missing teeth is essential not only for aesthetic reasons but also to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting, which can lead to bite problems and bone loss over time.
The procedure involves preparing the anchor teeth (abutments) to support the bridge, taking precise impressions, and fitting a temporary bridge while your custom restoration is fabricated. During the second appointment, the permanent bridge is cemented into place and adjusted for a perfect fit. Bridges are a durable, cost-effective alternative to implants for many patients, and with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, they can provide excellent function and appearance for a decade or more.
What to expect
- The anchor teeth on either side of the gap are prepared and impressions are taken at the first appointment
- A temporary bridge is fitted to protect the prepared teeth while your permanent restoration is fabricated in a dental laboratory
- At the second appointment the permanent bridge is cemented and adjusted for bite comfort and alignment
- We will show you how to clean under the bridge using a floss threader — this keeps the surrounding gum tissue healthy
