A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged, weakened, or heavily restored tooth to restore its strength, size, and appearance. At Dr A.I. Thomas & Partners, we use high-quality ceramic and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns that are carefully crafted to match the colour and contour of your natural teeth. Crowns are an ideal solution for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, have large fillings, or have been cracked or broken.
The crown process typically involves two appointments: the first to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and the second to fit and cement the permanent crown. A temporary crown is placed in the interim to protect the tooth. Our dentists pay close attention to bite alignment and aesthetics to ensure your crown feels natural and looks beautiful. With proper care, dental crowns can last many years, making them a worthwhile investment in your long-term oral health.
What to expect
- The first appointment involves preparing the tooth, taking precise impressions, and fitting a temporary crown — this takes about 60 minutes
- Your permanent crown is custom-made in a dental laboratory and is ready within one to two weeks
- At the second appointment the temporary crown is removed, the permanent crown is cemented, and the bite is carefully adjusted
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods for 24 hours after fitting; after that you can eat normally
